This was the widest deep cast iron skillet that I could find. I really like it. I am glad that I purchased it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful useful pan, May 13, 2011
By
Robert Drake (Dedham, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This is a useful pan, especially for stir-frys.

The 5qt deep skillet, which is the same diameter as a Lodge 12" fry pan, where the lid meets the pan; when heated holds the heat like no other piece of cookware you've ever used. Before we became as health conscious as we are today, this pan was sold as a "chicken fryer". Indeed, someday, Im going to use this pan to fry some chicken or fish. Think of this pan as the pan that is taller than a skillet, but shorter than your dutch oven.

Lodge used to sell this with a cast iron lid (beter for braising, but the "look inside" feature of the glass lids is nice).

A major problem with making stir-fry at home is that residential stoves don't have put out enough heat energy (BTU's) to adequately heat a carbon steel wok enough to hit the stir-fry with enough heat to do the "fry" part of stir-fry. Instead the addition of each ingredient cools the temperature of the wok down to where it more steams the food instead... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy, will survive the apocalypse, October 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This thing is heavy and I love it. It's everything you expect out of a cast iron skillet, as long as you season it properly you won't have any problems. The lid fits well although the circular handle comes loose sometimes so you need to tighten it, not a big deal. My wife hates using it because it's so heavy, so I wouldn't recommend it for every day cooking.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Than Just a Rice Cooker, September 23, 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
George Foreman is known for marketing functional and convenient products that help people prepare healthy meals. This product is no exception.

This product is basically a large rice/grain, vegetable, and meat cooker. It took me a little while to figure out what to use it for, and the manual wasn't much help. The main unit of the cooker is a big, non-stick pot. It comes with a steaming tray that fits inside the main unit. The product also includes a lid, measuring cup, serving paddle, plastic base, and a digital control unit that plugs into the wall.

Here is how it works. To begin, you pan fry whatever needs fried, such as meat. There are a variety of temperature settings, from warm (180 degrees) to sear (close to 500 degrees). After the frying is done, you add water, rice, and whatever other ingredients you need for the recipe. Then you set the unit to cook the mix. There are "brown rice," "other rice," and "steam" settings.

My wife and I decided to... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy and compact, September 24, 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I was confused about what this cooker was until I actually cooked in it. Why? Because nothing I read about it made it clear what its kitchen niche was supposed to be. Slow cooker? Nope. Rice cooker? Well yeah, but not entirely. Steamer? It does that, too. In fact it does a lot of things and does them pretty well. One thing it doesn't do well, though, is explain itself.

The manual is less than useless. It's careful to tell you to wash all the cooking parts before using, but never is clear on what is machine washable and what isn't. (I just assumed everything but the pot itself was okay for the dish washer. So far so good.) It also says "To reduce the risk of electric shock, cook only in removable pan provided." Um... what? Did they think I was going to put the lid on my stove and try to cook in it? Okay, never mind the manual. Seriously, it's worth one quick run through to check that you've got all the parts and see how they fit together (assuming you can't... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars + *: Very versatile cooker, December 11, 2010

This review is from: George Foreman RC0995P 20-Cup Smart Kitchen Multicooker with Intelli-Probe Digital Controls (Kitchen)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Many multipurpose devices do not perform any particular task very well: the proverbial Jack-Of-All-Trades, master of none. This interesting cooker is different. It appears to work as well as single task devices for a number of functions.

First, this is a rice cooker. After making multiple pots of rice, I have to say it works quite well. It is a step down from our Zojirushi but a definite step up from a few other rice cookers my wife and I have owned. Congee, in particular, turns out very good. I put in leftover turkey bones, threw in rice, water, and some ginger as described in Joy of Cooking. The result was excellent.

It also does very well as a steamer. It takes just a few button presses to set the steam time and it automatically stops after the timer counts down from when steaming starts. We have steamed... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very good........, December 28, 2007
By
This review is from: Bayou Classic 1101 10-Quart Stainless-Steel Fry Pot with Lid and Basket (Lawn & Patio)
This pot is lightweight stainless steel. The bottom scorched through, (blackened) on it's first use. I used it on my stove's 16,000 BTU burner, but that has not been a problem for my other cookware. The fried chicken it produced was good, but I'm sure this pot can't stand up to heavy use. Buy it only for occasional use. If you plan to fry alot, buy a basket for your dutch oven or buy a commercial aluminum fry bottom/basket.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy Pot, Nice to have, January 5, 2008
This review is from: Bayou Classic 1101 10-Quart Stainless-Steel Fry Pot with Lid and Basket (Lawn & Patio)
I use this pot with my BC SQ14 outdoor burner. I picked it over the aluminum pot because SS is better quality. SS is easier to clean and for this combo, I can just wipe with a soapy sponge to get it squeaky clean. SS is much more expensive though.

It takes awhile to get the peanut oil up to the recommended temperature of 350F to fry. The temperature drops by about 15-20F once food is put into the oil. I've been doing my frying as of late right after getting it for Thanksgiving, so the average outdoor temperature when I've fried has generally has been around 40-50F.

The one thing that bothered me the first time I used it was that seemed as though oil was leaking through the rivets that secure the handles onto the pot. The handles come permanently installed, so it's not like the handle for the basket that needs to be screwed on. This can be dangerous if oil leaks out to the burner and catches fire. The leaking seems to have stopped, or maybe lately, my oil... Read more

I was very well please with the Bayou Classic fryer in fact we had fish the following day and boy did it make a big difference using a fryer with a basket instead of a large pot.
